Vancouver Opera Forced To Make Pay Cuts

By Francisco Salazar

The Vancouver Opera’s staff and contractors have been asked to take pay cuts in order for the opera company officials to work toward financial stability.

The staff was told about the proposed measure last week and offered various options for cuts, first at a meeting and later in an online poll.  Among the options that were offered included unpaid days off, reductions involving provincial health-care premiums and matching RRSP contributions, an across-the-board 2-per-cent salary reduction and donations to the opera as a payroll deduction. But according to Global and Mail, the reaction to the proposed measured was met unfavorably and staff members sent letters of protest to senior management.

The cuts in pay are expected to save the company around $45,000 especially since the company has an annual budget of about $9.6-million.

The Vancouver Opera kicks off on Oct. 10, 2017, with Amber Wagner in the title role of Puccini’s “Turandot” and is also slated to showcase Donizetti’s “L’Elisir D’Amore” and Tchaikovsky’ “Eugene Onegin.”
