Top 6 Operas To See This Weekend (4/13-15): Iréne Theorin, Evelyn Herlitzius & Anna Caterina Antonacci Lead Weekend

This week we look at six different operas scattered around Europe that are sure to bring about unique experiences.

Götterdämmerung – Wiener Staatsoper, Austria 

Stephen Gould, Eric Halfvarson, and Iréne Theorin lead the final installment in Wagner’s Tetralogy. The opera, which will also be live streamed, is set to be conducted by Adam Fischer. It will also be the final performance of the work this season.

Benvenuto Cellini – Opera de Paris, France

Terry Gilliam directs Berlioz’s masterpiece in the final performance of an acclaimed run starring John Osborn, Pretty Yende, Maurizio Muraro, and Michèle Losier. Philippe Jordan conducts.

Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk – Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany 

Evelyn Herlitzius sings the role of Katarina in Shostakovich’s masterpiece wit Sergey Polyakov, Kurt Rydl, Thomas Blondelle, and Burkhard Ulrich. Donald Runnicles conducts Ole Anders Tandberg’s production.

I Capuleti e Montecci – Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Portugal 

Mihaela Marcu and Alessandra Volpe star in the leading roles of Bellini’s early masterpiece. Giampaolo Bisanti conducts the production by Arnaud Bernard which is set to open on Saturday. Davide Giusti, Luís Rodrigues, and Christian Luján round out the cast.

Gloriana – Teatro Real, Spain

Anna Caterina Antonacci leads an international cast in Benjamin Britten’s rarely performed masterpiece. Sir David McVicar directs the new production also starring Sophie Bevan, Duncan Rock, Paula Murrihy and Leonardo Capalbo. Ivor Bolton conducts.

Luisa Miller – Opernhaus Zurich, Switzerland

Nino Machaidze continues her run in the title run of Verdi’s early work. In her debut season in Zurich she is joined by Matthew Polenzani in his role debut as Rodolfo and Leo Nucci. Riccardo Frizza conducts.
