The Glimmerglass 2019 Festival To Feature World Premiere & Verdi

The Glimmerglass Festival has announced its 2019 season.

Mainstage 

The festival will open with Hammerstein’s “Show Boat,” directed by Francesca Zambello and E. Loren Meeker and conducted by James Lowe. Eric Sean Fogel will be the choreographer to the musical and the production will be sponsored by Beth and Gary Glynn.

Next on the lineup will be “La Traviata” directed by Francesca Zambello. The opera returns after 10 years and will be conducted by Joseph Colaneri. The production will be sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Dudley D. Johnson.

The company also present a new production of Corigliano’s “The Ghost of Versailles.” Jay Lesenger directs the new production with Joseph Colaneri conducting, and Eric Sean Fogel as the choreographer. The production will be sponsored by Elizabeth M. and Jean-Marie R. Eveillard.

The final opera on the slate will be the world premiere of Jeanine Tesori and Tazewell Thompson’s “Blue. The work will offer an intimate look at the reality of an unimaginable loss. The work, which will include a cast of 10, will focus on a black family in Harlem. Zambello noted in a press release, “I approached Jeanine and Tazewell almost two years ago about writing an opera tackling the subject of race in America. The result will be a tender, beautiful production offering audience members the opportunity to reflect, question, and continue the conversation. Blue brings the discussion on race to the forefront of modern opera.” Tazewell Thompson will direct, and John DeMain will conduct “Blue.”

Youth Opera & Others

The Festival will present Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades,” in a special adaptation combining the text from Pushkin’s short story with highlights from Tchaikovsky’s score. The work will be presented with piano accompaniment in the Pavilion.

There will also be a new production of Benjamin Britten’s “Noah’s Flood.” It will feature the Glimmerglass Youth Chorus performing alongside members of the company’s Young Artists Program with piano accompaniment.

The Glimmglass Festival will run July 6 through August 24, 2019.
