Sonya Yoncheva’s Met Opera ‘Tosca’ Comes to PBS In Mid-June

By David Salazar

PBS will showcase Puccini’s “Tosca” from the Metropolitan Opera as part of its Great Performances Series on Friday, June 15, 2018.

The broadcast will kick off at 9 p.m. EDT and will showcase soprano Sonya Yoncheva as the tragic heroine. This was the first of Yoncheva’s big season, during which she appeared on three Live in HD broadcasts. Her “Bohème” performance was already showcased on PBS.

The production also features Vittorio Grigolo as her beloved Cavaradossi with Zeljko Lucic as the villainous Scarpia. Emmanuel Villaume conducts the performance which inspired this writer to write an editorial on the nature of opera reviews.

This is the latest in a season-long series that will still showcase transmissions of the Met’s Live in HD season. PBS will still showcase such operas as “Luisa Miller,” “Così Fan Tutte,” and “Cendrillon.” The broadcasts will run throughout the summer in time for the Met’s new 2018-19 season, whereupon PBS will start broadcasting that season’s Live in HD transmissions.
