Sonya Yoncheva Cancels Munich ‘Norma’

By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva has canceled her performances of Bellini’s “Norma” at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

The soprano announced that due to pregnancy  she would not be able to perform the role. She stated, “With deep regret I have to renounce from Norma at the Bayerische Staatsoper on June 30 and July 3. I’m now in my 7th month and considering the extreme heat at the moment, I won’t be able to sing a staged opera such as Norma. I’m planning to return to the stage for the concerts in Madrid and Savonlinna.”

As a result, Carmen Giannattasio will replace Yoncheva. Giannattasio performed the role this season with the company and she is set to return to the Munich stage next season for Verdi’s “I Masnadieri” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

“Norma” stars Riccardo Massi, Angela Brower, and Mika Kares.
