Sondra Radvanovsky Retires Donizetti Opera

By Francisco Salazar

Sondra Radvanovsky has canceled March performances of “Roberto Devereux.”

The soprano was scheduled to perform the role of Elisabetta on March 17 and 20 but has decided to retire the role from her repertoire. The decision comes a week after her successful run at the San Francisco Opera where OperaWire noted, “Radvanovsky sang with transparent high register and dark and penetrating lows.”

Radvanovsky also made history at the Metropolitan Opera with the role as she became the first soprano in the history of the company to perform all three Donizetti Tudor queens in one season.

As a result, legendary soprano Edita Gruberova will replace Radvanovsky adding the two performances to her already scheduled performances on March 23 and 27.

“Roberto Devereux” also stars Charles Castronovo and is conducted by Friedrich Haider.
