Saudi Arabia To Construct First Ever Opera House

By Francisco Salazar

Saudi Arabia is set to construct its first-ever opera house.

The kingdom announced that the house will be built as a move to shake off its conservative image and lure tourist dollars. Saudi Arabia has banned concerts and prohibits music in restaurants and stores over the years and in the last few years has tried to relax its decades-old restrictions on entertainment and fun, as part of a wider effort spearheaded by the young crown prince to boost the economy and increase household spending domestically.

The announcement of the new opera house brought along the details that the building will be constructed in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on the kingdom’s western coast. The city, a gateway for millions of Muslim pilgrims from around the world, is seen as more liberal and ethnically diverse than the landlocked capital of Riyadh.
