By Francisco Salazar

On August 23, 2018, Plácido Domingo will make history singing his 150th role.

The tenor-turned-baritone will sing the role of Zurga in Bizet’s ‘The Pearl Fishers” in a concert performance at the Salzburg Festival alongside Aida Garifullina and Javier Camarena. Domingo has already made history as the performer with the most roles in the history of opera and for having switched from tenor to baritone and garnering acclaim.

Domingo first performed in “The Pearl Fishers” in the tenor role of Nadir, making his role debut on his 23rd birthday on Jan. 21, 1964, at the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv. He continued to perform the opera a total of 51 times, primarily in Tel Aviv and on tour in other cities throughout Israel.

For those not present at the Salzburg Festival, the historical role debut will be broadcast on August 25 at 7:30 pm CEST on ORF Radio Channel Ö1.
