Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Announces New Music Director

By Francisco Salazar

The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale has named Richard Egarr the next music director.

Egarr will become the second Music director for the orchestra in its 40-year history. He will succeed Nicholas McGegan and will begin his work in the position during the 2020-21 season.

In a press statement, executive director Courtney Beck said, “I am delighted to name Richard Egarr as Philharmonia’s new Music Director. Nic McGegan has laid an extraordinary foundation from which Richard can build… Richard has new ideas about repertoire and soloists as well as interesting ideas about major projects that build on what PBO has been doing so well.

“What you see is what you get with Richard: a down-to-earth artist who loves music and people no matter their background,” Beck continued.

Egarr is already well-known to the PBO as he has conducted three times since 2012 in both their regular and alternative concert series.
