“Don Carlo,” which premiered on March 11, 1867, is arguably Verdi’s most complex concoction.
The work features five major characters, all of them imbued with tremendous complexity, some more than others. Among them we see a confused prince trying to find purpose in his life; a rebel ready to risk all for his cause; a queen troubled by the conflict between duty and love; a princess trying to earn her rightful place among the elite; and finally, a King who is struggling to understand his moral compass.
The opera remains fascinating because it remains so relevant and many of us can find ourselves within these incredible creations. Find out which one of them is most similar to you with this week’s quiz!
