The New National Theatre, Toyko is set to showcase a production of Offenbach’s famed “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” starting on Feb. 28, 2018.

The opera will star tenor Dmitry Korchak in the lead role with Lena Belkina as Nicklausse. Korchak previously appeared with the company in 2016 in “Werther.”

The three heroines will be performed by three separate Japanese artists, including Yoko Yasui as Olympia, Ryoko Sunakawa as Antonia, and Keiko Yokoyama as Giulietta.

The villainous Lindorf and his incarnations will be performed by Tomasz Konieczny, in his company debut. Conductor Sébastian Rouland, also making his first appearance at the theatre, will lead the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in the production by Philippe Arlaud. Per the official website, the production was brought to the New National Theatre Toyko in 2003.

“He brings added depth to the work with radiating wit and humor, as well as effective use of fluorescent colors, bringing out the sense of fantasy of the work,” says the company’s official page.

The opera will run for four performances with additional showcases on March 4, 6, and 10. The production is set to celebrate the theatre’s 20th anniversary.
