Michael Mayes, Amanda Woodbury Among Stars Of Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend (North America)

Festival season is in full swing and this weekend’s major offerings come from some of the most exciting summer festivals in North America. Here are our top five offerings (in alphabetical order by company).

Madama Butterfly – Central City Opera

The famed Puccini masterpiece opens on Saturday with Raquel González, Annie Rosen, Cody Austin, Troy Cook, and Joseph Gaines. Adam Turner conducts and Alison Moritz directs.

Wozzeck – Des Moines Metro Opera

On Saturday, the Des Moines Metro Opera performs the “opera that changed everything” with Michael Mayes in the title role. He will be joined by Sara Gartland and Zachary James. Kristine McIntyre directs the production that David Neely conducts.

La Traviata – Glimmerglass Festival

Amanda Woodbury stars in the title role alongside Kang Wang, and Adrian Timpau. Joseph Colaneri conducts the starry cast in a production directed by Francesca Zambello. The opera opens on Sunday afternoon.

La Fille du Régiment – Opera Saratoga

Lawrence Edelson directs Donizetti’s comic gem with Santiago Ballerini as Tonio. He will perform alongside Keely Futterer in the title role. Andrew Bisantz conducts.

The Pearl Fishers – Santa Fe Opera

On Friday, Santa Fe Opera will showcase the second performance of Bizet’s increasingly popular work. Corinne Winters stars alongside Anthony Clark Evans and Ilker Arcayürek. Timothy Myers directs a production by Shawna Lucey.
