Metropolitan Opera 2017-18 Live in HD Preview: Joyce DiDonato to Light Cinemas For 8th Time in ‘Cendrillon’

By David Salazar

This Saturday, audiences around the world will get a chance to see Massenet’s “Cendrillon” in cinemas as part of the company’s famed Live in HD broadcast.

The showcase kicks off at 12:25 p.m. EDT and will star Joyce DiDonato as Cendrillon, Kathleen Kim as La Fée, Alice Coote as the Prince, Stephanie Blythe as Madame de la Haltière, and Laurent Naouri as Pandolfe. Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Laurent Pelly.

This is the first ever run of the Massenet opera at the Metropolitan Opera, but many of these artists are no newcomers to the Live in HD game. For DiDonato, this will be her eighth appearance in cinemas. Her first time was in 2007 for “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” and since, she has appeared in “Le Comte Ory,” “The Enchanted Island,” “Maria Stuarda,’ “La Cenerentola,” “La Donna Del Lago,” and “Norma.”

This will be Kim’s fourth broadcast as she has appeared in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann,” “Nixon in China,” and “Un Ballo in Maschera.”

Coote is appearing in her fifth Live in HD performance following showcases in “Hansel and Gretel,” “Giulio Cesare,” “Idomeneo,” and “The Exterminating Angel.”

This is Blythe’s eighth broadcast as well with prior appearances in “Il Trittico,” “Orfeo ed Euridice,” “Das Rheingold,” “Die Walküre,” “Rodelinda,” “Un Ballo in Mashchera,” and “Falstaff.”

Finally, Naouri will get his second broadcast following last year’s “Roméo et Juliette.”

De Billy is coming off his first Live in HD broadcast of this season’s “Luisa Miller.”

This is the last work in the Live in HD transmission of the season.
