The Teatro alla Scala has announced its 2018-19 season featuring a number of new productions and operatic classics. The season will once again include a number of Italian operas continuing the theater’s initiative to bring back Italian opera.

Productions 

The season opens with a new production of Verdi’s “Attila” starring Ildar Abdrazakov. David Livermore directs the new production which also stars Saioa Hernandez, Fabio Sartori, and  Simone Piazzola. Riccardo Chailly conducts.

Performance Date: Dec. 7 2018 –  January 8, 2019

Marina Rebeka sings the her signature Violetta in Verdi’s “La Traviata” with Francesco Meli and Leo Nucci. Sonya Yoncheva, Plácido Domingo and Benjamin Bernheim alternate during the run. Myung-Whun Chung conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 11 to 17 March 17, 2019

Marianne Crebassa sings the title role of Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” with Maxim Mironov, Carlos Chausson, Nicola Alaimo, and Erwin Schrott. Ottavio Dantone conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 10 – April 5, 2019

Ekaterina Semenchuk stars in Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina” with Mikhail Petrenko, Alexey Markov, and Sergei Skorokhodov. Valery Gergiev conducts Mario Martone’s production.

Performance Dates: Feb. 27 – March 29, 2019

David Pountney directs a new production of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut.” Maria José Siri and Marcelo Álvarez star with Riccardo Chailly conducting Massimo Cavalletti rounds out the cast.

Performance Dates:  March 31 – April 27, 2019

Frederic Wake-Walker directs a new production of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Krassimira Stoyanova and Tamara Wilson sharing the title role. Sabine Devieilhe and Brenda Rae share the role of Zerbinetta while Michael Koenig takes on Bacchus. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

Performance Dates: April 23 – June 22, 2019

Bernard Richter sings the title role in Mozart’s “Idomeneo” in a new production by Matthias Hartmann. Michèle Losier, Federica Lombardi, and Julia Kleiter also star with Christoph von Dohnányi conducting.

Performance Dates: May 16 –  June 5, 2019

Graham Vick directs a new production of Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt.” Alan Gilbert conducts a cast that includes Klaus Florian Vogt, Markus Werba, and Asmik Grigorian.

Sir David McVicar directs Verdi’s “I Masnadieri” with Fabio Sartori, Michele Pertusi and Massimo Cavalletti. Michele Mariotti conducts.

Performance Dates: June 18 –  July 7, 2019

Ambrogio Maestri stars in a new double bill with Salieri’s “Prima La Musica poi Le Parole” and Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.” Nicola Raab directs Salieri’s work while Woody Allen directs Puccini’s comedy. Ádám Fischer conducts.

Nello Santi conducts Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Leo Nucci in his signature role.

Performance Dates: Sept. 2 – 22, 2019

Rosa Feola, René Barbera, Vittorio Grigolo, Ambrogio Maestri, and Massimo Cavalletti lead the cast of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” with Michele Gamba conducting.

Performance Dates: Sept. 10 – Oct. 10 2019

Allison Cook and Robin Adams star in Luca Francesconi’s “Quartett.” Maxime Pacal conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 5-22, 2019

Cecilia Bartoli stars in a new production of Handel’s “Giulio Cesare” with Robert Carsen conducting. Giovanni Antonini conducts an exceptional cast that includes Philippe Jaroussky, Christophe Dumaux, and Bejun Mehta.

Performance Dates: Oct. 18 – Nov. 7, 2019

Franz Welser-Möst conducts a new production of Strauss’ “Die ägyptische Helena” directed by Sven-Eric Bechtolf. Ricarda Merbeth, Andrea Schager, Eva Mei and Thomas Hampson star.

Performance Dates: Nov. 9-29, 2019 

Recitals 

The season will also include recitals by Jessica Pratt, Luca Salsi, Krassimira Stoyanova, Fabio Sartori, Marianne Crebassa, Christian Gerhaher, and Günther Groissböck.

Concerts 

Paula Murrihy and Florian Boesch sing selections from Mahler’s Lieder aus des Knaben Wunderhorn while Plácido Domingo, Juan Diego Flórez, Jonas Kaufmann, Yuja Wang, and Sonya Yoncheva lead a Rolex Ambassadors Gala.
