Only a few days after the announcement of the revised 2020-21 season, the Staatsoper Stuttgart has canceled February and March performances.

The German company announced that it would shut down until at least March 31, 2021. Per the official statement on the company’s website, the current epidemiological situation still does not allow the resumption of performances.

“In order to give the opera houses in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe at least some planning security, we have decided to extend the closure,” said the Minister for Art Theresia Bauer. Secretary of State Petra Olschowski met with representatives of the municipal theaters, state theaters, private theaters, and youth theaters, and the institutions subsequently decided to take a joint stand toward the extended shutdown.

Further assessment of the situation was agreed for mid-February 2021.

Staatsoper Stuttgart thus joins a long list of German theaters and opera houses that have closed until April 2021.
