Staatstheater Nürnberg Names New Music Director

The Staatstheater Nürnberg has named Killian Farrell its new General Music Director and Chief Conductor.

Farrell will begin in his new position during the 2027-28 season and will succeed Roland Böer. 

In a statement, the conductor said, “I can’t wait to thrill the Nuremberg audience together with the State Philharmonic and the Opera Ensemble evening after night.”

The theater’s Artistic Director, Jens-Daniel Herzog added, “Killian Farrell is a musician whose enthusiasm and knowledge of music are absolutely contagious. With his inexhaustible energy, he will lead the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra into the Congress Hall and thus into a new chapter in its history.”

Farrell has been General Music Director of the Meiningen State Theater since the 2023-24 season and is a regular guest conductor at many of Germany’s major opera houses, including the Semperoper Dresden, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.He mainatins a close relationship with the Stuttgart State Opera, where he served as Kapellmeister and has appeared frequently as a guest since then. He was also Principal Kapellmeister at the Theater Bremen from the 2019-20 season, where he had already served as Kapellmeister and Assistant to the General Music Director since 2017.
