The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced its 2019-20 season, which will include six new productions and dozens of revivals with some of opera’s greatest stars.

New Productions

The first new production of the season will be Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino.” The production will be directed by Frank Castorf and will star Russell Thomas and Marcelo Alvarez as Don Alvaro. As Leonora, María José Siri and Liumyla Monastyrska will alternate while Markus Brück and Etienne Dupuis will take separate runs as Don Carlo. Pablo Cariginiani and John Fiore will conduct performances of the opera.

Performance Dates: Sept. 8-28, 2019; June 17-26, 2020

Claus Guth will direct Chaya Czerrnowin’s “Heart Chamber” in a production that stars Patrizia Ciofi, Noa Frenkel, Frauke Aulbert, Dietrich Henschel, and Terry Wey. Johannes Kalitzke conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 15- Dec. 6, 2019

James Hall, Siobhan Stagg, Gideon Poppe, Samuel Dale Johnson, Karis Tucker, and Janine De Bique star in Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in a new production by Ted Huffman. Donald Runnicles conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 26 – Feb. 22, 2020

“Antikrist,” by Rued Langgaard, will get a new production by Ersan Mondtag, who will also do costume and production design. Led in the pit by maestro Stephan Zilias, the opera will star Flurina Stucki, Michael König, Thomas Blondelle, Irene Roberts, Seth Carico, and Thomas Lehman.

Performance Dates: March 21-April 24, 2020

Graham Vick will direct Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” with Sondra Radvanovsky starring as Lisa. She will be joined by Martine Muehle as Hermann, Hanna Schwarz, Seth Carico, Thomas Lehmann, and Judit Kutasi. Sebastian Weigle conducts.

Performance Dates: May 9-28, 2020

“Das Rheingold” gets a new production by Stefan Herheim with Donald Runnicles conducting. The cast will include Derek Welton as Wotan and Markus Brück as Alberich. Other cast members include Annika Schlicht, Flurina Stucki, Judit Kutasi, Thomas Blondelle, and Tobias Kehrer as Fricka, Freia, Erda, Loge, and Fafner, respectively. Padraic Rowan and Robert Watson are Donner and Froh while Andrew Harris is Fasolt. As the Rheinmaidens are Meechot Marrero, Irene Roberts, and Anna Buslidze.

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov headline concert performances of “Adriana Lecouvreur” with Clémentine Margaine as the Princesse de Bouillon and Alessandro Corbelli as Michonnet. Michelangelo Mazza conducts.

Enrique Mazzola leads concert performances of Meyerbeer’s “Dinorah” with Sabine Devieilhe, Florian Sempey, Philippe Talbot, Seth Carico, Nicole Haslett, Amber Fasquelle, and Gideon Poppe.

Nicole Car and Etienne Dupuis will perform together in a concert performance of “Thaïs” conducted by Nicholas Carter. Paolo Fanale plays Nicias.

Rosa Feola sings the title role in Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” with Javier Camarena and Alexis Stavrakakis  rounding out the cast. Stephan Zilias conducts the revival.

Irene Roberts sings the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Saimir Pirgu and Robert alternating as Don José. Elena Tsallagova sings Micaëla, while Markus Brück and Samuel Dale Johnson share the role of Esamillo. Jordi Bernacer and Jaques Lacombe alternate at the pit.

Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” gets a revival in time for the holiday season. The revival is set to star Jana Kurucova and Irene Roberts as Hansel and Jacquelyn Stucker and Alexander Hutton sharing the role of Gretel. Burkhard Ulrich and Andrew Dickinson alternate the role of the Witch.

Janacek’s “Jenufa” returns Berlin with Rachel Harnisch, Evelyn Herlitzius, Ladislaw Elgr, and Robert Watson. Donald Runnicles conducts.

Robert Alagna sings the famed double bill “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” with Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandra Kurzak as his two heroines. Rodrigo Esteves and Carlos Alvarez round out the cast.

Three casts highlight Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” Attilio Glaser, Andrei Danilov, and Matthew Newlin will sing Tamino, while Alexandra Jovanovic and Flurina Stucki alternate as the Queen of the Night.

Pamina will be portrayed by Jacquelyn Stucker, Elena Tsallagova, and Siobhan Stagg, while Philipp Jekal and Simon Pauly will alternate as Papageno. Daniel Carter and Stephan Zilias conduct.

Puccini’s “Tosca” gets three superstars in the title role. Nina Stemme brings her acclaimed portrayal alongside Fabio Sartori and Ambrogio Maestri.

Then in January Saioa Hernandez and Anja Harteros share the role with Jorge de Leon and Ludovic Tezier rounding out the cast. Donald Runnicles and Yoel Gamzou conduct.

The second cast will include Yosep Kang, Markus Brück, Tamara Wilson, and Ronnita Miller with Nikolas Maximilian Nagele conducting.

George Gagnidze and Maria Guleghina sing Verdi’s “Nabucco” with John Relyea, and Robert Watson. The production will also show Enkhbat Amartuvshin’s Nabucco, Liudmyla Monastyrska and Anna Pirozzi’s Abigaille. Attilio Glaser, Mika Kares, and Andrea Bauer Kanabas also star.
