San Francisco’s Community Music Center Set to Hold Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrating Campus Expansion

By Chris Ruel

San Francisco’s Community Music Center (CMC) has announced a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the expansion of its Mission District Campus on Feb. 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. PST.

This year marks CMC’s 100th birthday, and the move into a neighboring building will open up more music space by providing enlarged classrooms and adding a new recital hall. The expansion will also increase ADA accessibility as it continues to pursue its mission of bringing music to as wide an audience as possible.

“Our mission is to welcome everyone to enjoy, learn and embrace music in their lives,” said Julie Rulyak Steinberg, Community Music Center Executive Director in an official press statement. “It is with particular pleasure that we welcome the public to celebrate a milestone as we begin our next 100 years by expanding and enhancing our campus to better serve and engage people through making and enjoying music.”

The groundbreaking will feature performances by CMC students and faculty from the Children’s Chorus, Mission District Young Musicians Program, Mission District Older Adult Choirs, and members of the SFUSD Mariachi Program. The event is free to attend; however, proof of vaccination and masks are required.

Construction is set to begin on Jan. 30 and is expected to be complete in early 2023.
