Opera Roanoke has appointed Stefanos Koroneos to its newly created role of Producing Director, effective July 1, 2026.

Koroneos brings more than 25 years of international experience spanning performing, stage directing, and arts administration. Born in Athens, Greece, he launched his career as a baritone, appearing on some of the world’s most storied stages, including Teatro alla Scala, the Bolshoi Theater, the Greek National Opera, New York City Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. Over the course of his performing career he collaborated with such legendary figures as Franco Zeffirelli, Fabrizio Melano, Moisés Kaufman, and conductor Richard Bonynge.

Since 2020, Koroneos has served as both General Director and Artistic Director of Teatro Grattacielo in New York City.

“His rare combination of performing experience, directorial vision, and organizational leadership makes him an extraordinary addition to our team,” said Brooke Tolley, General Director of Opera Roanoke, per an official press release. “Stefanos shares our belief that opera should be accessible, vibrant, and deeply connected to the audiences it serves, and we can’t wait to see what we’ll build together.”

“I look forward to contributing to that mission and collaborating with this talented team to create bold, compelling work that resonates with audiences,” added Koroneos.

Opera Roanoke was founded in 1976 and per its official website “is a cornerstone of the cultural life of western Virginia, offering professional productions alongside Young Artist Programs and community engagement initiatives.”
