Mid Wales Opera to Tour ‘Trouble in Tahiti’

Mid Wales Opera (MWO) will showcase Leonard Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti” this fall as part of its SmallStages tour.

The opera will run from Nov. 7 through Dec. 5, 2025, and stars Samantha Price as Dinah and Samuel Pantcheff as Sam, alongside Kirsty McLean, Sam Marston, and John Ieuan Jones as the jazz trio. Richard Studer directs and designs, with Lyness leading from the piano.

“On the face of it, middle-class 1950s American suburbia seems a long way from rural Wales,” said Music Director Jonathan Lyness per an official press release, “but Bernstein’s celebrated analysis of a broken American dream, with its office misconduct, its macho gym workouts, its cinematic escapism and its ‘fake-news’ Greek chorus is as engaging for all of us in today’s world as it ever was and, when presented with such jazz-enthused energy and poignant simplicity, utterly compelling.”

The tour will open on Friday, Nov. 7, at Hafren in Newtown, followed by a performance on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the Holroyd Community Theatre in Weston Rhyn near Oswestry. On Thursday, Nov. 13, the production travels to the Borough Theatre in Abergavenny, and on Friday, Nov. 14, it will be staged at the Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells. The following week brings performances on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Ffwrnes in Llanelli, Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Theatr Maldwyn in Cardigan, and Thursday, Nov. 20 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre (Lydia Rowlands).

The tour continues on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Pontio in Bangor and Friday, Nov. 28, at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms. In December, the company appears on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at St Andrew’s Church in Presteigne, Thursday, Dec. 4 at Criccieth Memorial Hall, and concludes on Friday, Dec. 5 at Neuadd Dyfi in Aberdovey.
