Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Names Jaime Martin as Next Chief Conductor
By Logan MartellThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has announced that Jaime Martin has been appointed as its new Chief Conductor; he will begin his tenure in 2022.
Currently the Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, he is also the Chief Conductor of the RTE National Symphony, as well as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Gavle Symphony Orchestra, and has recently been named the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquestra y Coro Nacionales de Espana for its 2022-23 season.
Martin’s appointment comes after a rigorous, five-year search by MSO for a successor to former Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis. Following an accomplished career as a flutist, Martin shifted to conducting full-time in 2013. Recent and upcoming engagements include performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Gulbenkian Orchestra, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Managing Director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sophie Galaise said, ‘’Jaime has already left a lasting impression on the Orchestra in his previous visits to Melbourne. He has wowed us all with his joyous music making, remarkable artistry, and incredible connection to our musicians. We are excited to welcome Jaime to Victoria and share his vision with our music-loving community. The Orchestra will shine under Jaime’s baton.’’
Maestro Martin is currently set to return to Melbourne in August 2021 to meet with the community and lead the MSO in three public concerts that month.
