Jessica Fishenfeld, Teresa Buchholz, Amber Evans to Headline Premiere of ‘In Venice’

Composer Paul Scherer and librettist Germaine Shames’ “In Venice” is set to premiere in New York on Sept. 21 and 22, 2024.

The opera, which is based on Edith Wharton‘s short stories “The Muse’s Tragedy” and “The Touchstone,” is a 90-minute two-act chamber piece about a poet’s biographer and the poet’s muse as they spend time together in Venice. The romance blossoms and time passes, with the biographer returning 10 years later with his wife, having sold the Muse’s love letters to pay for the honeymoon.

The opera stars Jessica Fishenfeld, Amber Evans, Patrick Bessenbacher, Courtney Carey, Shavon Lloyd, and Teresa Buchholz and is directed by Anthony Newfield. Jackson McKinnon conducts.

“From the moment the audience is seated in the turn-of-the-century Italianesque performance venue, a former Vanderbilt mansion, the world of the story will come vibrantly alive—the transatlantic world of young Edith Wharton,” Shames told OperaWire. “A virtuosic ensemble of six vocalists and six instrumentalists will fill the space with the haunting, transporting score of ‘In Venice,’ a timeless cautionary tale of temptation and betrayal amid privilege. At this high-stakes juncture in our collective history, we hope that audiences will leave the performance dazzled and reflective in equal parts. As Wharton knew a century and a quarter ago, the best of all worlds begins with personal integrity.”

The opera will be presented at the House of the Redeemer on E. 95th Street.
