Jan Nast has extended his contract as intendant of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Nast has been with the orchestra since 2019 and will remain with it until 2032.

In a statement he said, “It is a privilege to be able to work in a city like Vienna: here everything is music, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra is the orchestra of the city. Together we work to ensure that we are there as an ensemble for all Viennese and at the same time we proudly carry the musical spirit of Vienna out into the world. I am inspired by the city, the musicians and his chief conductor Petr Popelka – and I look forward to the further years together and the implementation of many new ideas.”

Veronica Kaup-Hasler, Vienna’s City of Culture Councillor added, “Jan Nast has shown that a modern orchestra can be deeply rooted both locally and highly successful internationally. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra has further expanded their role as ‘Orchestra of the City’ under his artistic direction and embody the emotional music DNA of Vienna. The orchestra stands for musical excellence and is accessible to all people at the same time. I am pleased that together with Jan Nast we can develop new ideas for the future and that the orchestra and its director continue on their innovative path after the anniversary season.”

Throughout his tenure Nast has worked alongside Chief Conductor Petr Popelka, and has introduced new initiatives  such as the Prater picnic, the Vienna Advent concerts in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Beisl concerts, and the chamber music series in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the WienMuseum.
