David Daniels Makes Statement Against Civil Complaint
By David SalazarCountertenor David Daniels has spoken out about the recent lawsuit made against him for alleged sexual assault.
“These allegations are both false and malicious. I have never had a physical relationship with the individual mentioned in this complaint. The events alleged her never happened and I intend to defend my reputation. I am an openly gay man who has been married to a wonderful partner for the past four years. It pains me that someone, for reasons I cannot fathom, would attempt to destroy my career, the program at Michigan, and all that I hold dear,” Daniels stated in a press release.
The countertenor was recently sued by Andrew Lipian, a former student of Daniels at the University of Michigan. Lipian alleges that Daniels drugged and assaulted him.
This is the most recent of accusations leveled against Daniels. Earlier this year, baritone Samuel Schultz stated that Daniels and his husband Scott Walters had drugged and raped him in 2010 after a performance of “Xerxes” at the Houston Grand Opera.
Daniels recently took a leave of absence from the University of Michigan.
