The Bolshoi Theatre will open Claus Guth’s highly anticipated production of R. Strauss’ “Salome.”

The new version of the opera is a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera, which was set to open during the 2021-22 season. However, Russian audiences will see the production first with star sopranos Asmik Grigorian and Ann Petersen sharing the title role.

In a statement, Сlaus Guth said “people often believe that modern costumes are already evidence of a ‘modern interpretation,'” but claimed that his production would try to show the “relevance” and the poignant moments of the opera, “leaving it in the time when it was created.”

The new production will feature sets by Etienne Pluss, costumes by Ursula Kudrna, lighting by Olaf Freese, and movement direction by Sommer Ulrickson.

The production opens on Feb. 25 and runs through Feb. 28, 2021 at the famed stage.
