Will Crutchfield Creates Teatro Nuovo As Caramoor Loses Bel Canto Programming

By David Salazar

For years, Will Crutchfield and his bel canto program were a fixture at Caramoor. That will end next year with the arrival of Teatro Nuovo, a nine-day festival, created by Crutchfield to continue his passion for bel canto.

The festival, which will bow in July 2018, will feature semi-staged productions of Rossini’s’ “Tancredi” and Mayr’s “Medea in Corinto.” There will also be orchestral concerts, vocal recitals, chamber music, and the afternoon lectures and panel discussions, all of which were popular during Caramoor.

The festival kicks off on July 28, 2018, and runs until August 5.

“Teatro Nuovo is an exciting next step for us. It is a continuation of what our fans have enjoyed in Bel Canto at Caramoor, but goes far beyond that,” said Crutchfield of his new creation. “Through a major expansion of the training program, the collaboration with SUNY Purchase, and the move to our own dedicated Festival, we are now poised to offer much more both to the operagoing public and to the young musicians who come to us in the summer.”

Bel Canto at Caramoor lasted a whopping 20 years and presented over 40 operas by Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi.
