What the Big Stars Are Up To At Deutsche Oper Berlin For 2017-18 Season

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced its 2017-18 season, a showcase of a whopping 35 operas featuring the biggest stars in the world.

The season will kick off with Verdi’s “La Traviata” on August 30, 2017, in a production by Götz Friedrich. The diverse casts will showcase Olga Peretyatko, Maria Agresta, Salome Jicia, Benjamin Bernheim and Leo Nucci among others.

Rare Operas Get a Look

As is to be expected with any season getting 35 operas, there are some rare gems getting a look. Among them are Korngold’s “Heliane’s Miracle,” Prokofiev’s “The Love for Three Oranges,” Rossini’s “Il viaggio a Reims,” Reimann’s “L’Invisible,” Meyerbeer’s “Le Prophète” and a concert version of Cilea’s “L’Arlesiana.”

The Biggest Stars

Of course the one question on everyone’s mind? What are the biggest stars performing? Here is a general rundown.

As noted, Peretyatko and Agresta will perform “La Traviata” with Bernheim and Nucci. Agresta will also be appearing in “Il Trovatore,” which also stars Anita Rachvelishvill as Azucena.

Clémentine Margaine appears in “Carmen” with Charles Castronovo as her Don José. She will also sing in “Le Prophète” alongside Dmitry Korchak.

Daniela Barcellona will sing her first Santuzza with Maria José Siri taking on Nedda in the double bill of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci.” Siri will also sing “Madama Butterfly” for which she garnered raves at La Scala this season.

Tenor Brian Jadge sings in “Heliane’s Miracle” while Kathryn Lewek sings her signature role of the Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute.”

Anja Harteros is set to make waves in three operas – Elsa in “Lohengrin,” Elisabeth de Valois in “Don Carlo” and Amelia in “Un Ballo in Maschera.”

Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is also set to appear in “Don Carlo” as King Phillip of Spain and Luca Salsi is set for the role of René Anckarstrom in “Un Ballo.”

Diana Damrau is set for a big season as Marguerite in “Faust” and the title role in “Maria Stuarda.” Her husband Nicolas Testé will appear in both operas as well and make an appearance in “La Gioconda.” Bryan Hymel will take on Gounod’s opera in the title role while Javier Camarena will sing in “Stuarda.”

Evelyn Herlitzius will sing in “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District,” Klaus Florian Vogt shares the title role of “Lohengrin” with Brandon Jovanovich and Pretty Yende appears in “Lucia di Lammermoor.”

Joseph Calleja sings in “L’Arlesiana” with Dolora Zajick while Liudmyla Monastyrska and Zeljko Lucic team up for “Nabucco.” This year’s “Rigoletto” features Stephen Costello and Simon Keenlyside while “Salome” will star Catherine Naglestad, who is also among the many star sopranos in “Tosca.” Monastyrska and Tatiana Serjan are also taking on the title role with Ambrogio Maestri, Brian Jadge and Lucic also singing in the Puccini classic.
