What is BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 Winner Catriona Morison Doing Next?

By David Salazar

Catriona Morison was a big winner at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition this weekend. Not only did she come up with a huge underdog victory, but she went through to make some serious history.

First off, she didn’t win her round of the Main Prize competition, but wound up in the final as the wild card participant. A day after receiving that news, she would wind up being a joint-winner of the Song Prize competition, the first time that has ever happened in the competition’s history.

And then on the final day of the main prize, she took home the award despite being the last finalist to make it through.

Many noted that of the finalists, she was the one with no agent and the least with overall experience. Shockingly, she never even started out as a singer, instead she started out studying violin and viola during her musical beginnings.

She would go on to win the Toonkunst Oratorio Prize at the 50th edition of the Hertogenbosch Competition in Holland, debut with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in 2014 and even appear at the BBC Proms in 2013.

She has also been a member of the Wuppertal Opera where she will next showcase her talents as Maddalena in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” She has no other scheduled engagements, though one might imagine that the winner of opera’s “World Cup” equivalent, will undeniably have some big contracts coming up.
