Weekend Preview (USA) – 2/17-19: Patricia Racette’s ‘Salome’ & Stewart Copeland’s ‘Invention of Morel’ Open

Prepare yourself for two high profile premieres this weekend on opposite sides of the country.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Opera lifts the curtain on “Salome” starring Patricia Racette in the role that she dominated at the Metropolitan Opera. Regarding her performance OperaWire wrote, “she dominated the stage in one of her greatest achievements on the Met stage.”

Another major premiere is taking place at the Windy City where the Chicago Opera Theater will premiere “The Invention of Morel,” an opera by Stewart Copeland.  The opera’s world premiere is on Saturday evening.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago continues its run of “Norma” on Saturday. Sondra Radvonovsky stars alongside Elizabeth DeShong and Russell Thomas. On Sunday, “Carmen” returns to the stage with Ekaterina Gubanova in the lead role and Joseph Calleja as Don Jose.

On Friday and Saturday, the Houston Grand Opera will finish out its run of performances of Verdi’s Requiem featuring Angela Meade, Sasha Cooke, Alexey Dolgov and Peixin Chen. Patrick Summers conducts.

In New York, the Metropolitan Opera will showcase another performance of “Rusalka.” OperaWire will have a review for this performance over the weekend. On Saturday “I Puritani” makes a return to the stage in the matinee performance while “Carmen” gets it final performance in the evening.
