Weekend Preview – USA (1/6-1/8): Opera World Slowly Starts Up in 2017

The weekend of Jan. 6-8 will see the return of many prominent opera companies around the country after a lengthy holiday hiatus.

The Metropolitan Opera, which continues throughout the year, will feature three popular works including “La Boheme,” an HD performance of Verdi’s “Nabucco” and evening showcase of Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” starring Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo. Nabucco stars Placido Domingo, Liudmyla Monastyrka, Jamie Barton and Russell Thomas with James Levine in the pit. “La Boheme” stars Ailyn Perez and Michael Fabiano as the lovers Mimi and Rodolfo.

In the meantime, the New York City Opera will be kicking off its new season with four performances of “Candide” from Friday through Sunday. The opera features Tony Award-nominee Gregg Edelman, Tony Award-winner Linda Lavin, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Mehan Picerno, Keith Phares, Jessica Tyler White and Broadway favorites Chip Zien and Brooks Ashmanskas. Harold Prince will direct the revival.

Beth Morrison Projects will showcase the world premiere of the opera “Breaking the Waves” with music composed by Missy Mazzoli. The opera will be performed starting on Jan. 6 and run through Jan. 9.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago will continue its run of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” on Friday and Sunday. Andrew Staples stars as Tamino alongside Adam Plachetka as Papageno, Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night and Christiane Karg as Pamina.
