Weekend Preview – International (7/28-30): Jonas Kaufmann, Elina Garanca, Tamara Wilson & Diana Damrau Headline Festivals

Festival season continues with some of the greatest stars headlining major productions around the world. Find out what you can see this weekend.

Austria 

At the Salzburg Festival, “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse,” “L’Incoronazion di Poppea” and “La Clemenza di Tito,” starring Russell Thomas and Golda Schultz, headline the weekend.

Meanwhile at the Bregenz Festival, Bizet’s “Carmen” will showcased on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Costa Rica 

Elizabeth Caballero headlines “La Traviata” at the Compania Lírica de Costa Rica.

Germany 

At the Bayreuth Festival “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walkure” will take the stage. The operas will be headlined by Iain Paterson, Catherine Foster, Camilla Nylund, and Georg Zeppenfeld.

The Bayerische Staatsoper continues with “Andrea Chénier” starring Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann, “La Favorite” with Elina Garanca and Matthew Polenzani, and “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” with Diana Damrau and Michael Spyres.

Italy 

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma continues its festival at the Caracalla with “Nabucco,” “Tosca” with Tatiana Serjan, and “Carmen.”

The Arena di Verona showcases “Aida” with Monica Zanettin and Gaston Rivero, and “Madama Butterfly” with Sae-Kyung Rim in the title role.

María José Siri stars as “Madama Butterfly” at the Macerata Festival. “Aida” will also be shown with Liana Aleksanyan and Anna Maria Chiuri.

Meanwhile, The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will present “L’Elisir d’Amore” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.”

Spain 

The 2016-17 Liceu season comes to end on Saturday with “Il Trovatore.” Kristin Lewis and Tamara Wilson alternate the role of Leonora while Marco Berti and Piero Pretti share the title role.
