Weekend Preview – International (7/14-16): Angela Gheorghiu & Ramón Vargas Inaugurate Prague Festival

It’s a quiet weekend in the opera world with many companies down to their last productions, while others continue their festivals. That said, many of the leading artists will be performing including Angela Gheorghiu, Ramón Vargas, Diana Damrau and Paul Appleby.

Czech Republic 

In Prague, the music festival kicks on July 14, 2017, with a concert starring Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas. The two are reuniting after having worked together on “La Traviata” and “La Bohème” together.

France 

The Aix-En-Provence Festival continues on Friday with “Pinocchio” and “The Rake’s Progress” starring Paul Appleby. On Saturday the festival presents “Carmen,” starring Michael Fabiano, and “Don Giovanni,” with Eleonora Buratto and Isabel Leonard taking center stage. The weekend ends with “Pinocchio.”

The Opéra de Paris continues its run of “Carmen” on Sunday with  Elina Garanca stepping in for one performance.

Germany 

Karita Mattila and Stuart Skelton star in “Jenufa” while Diana Damrau reprises “Lucia Di Lammermoor” at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Finally, Liudmyla Monastyrska stars “Nabucco” at the Munich Opera Festival continues.

Italy 

Sonya Yoncheva returns to Milan for the final performance of Puccini’s “La Bohème” while Marta Torbidoni and Adriana Iozzia share the title role of “La Traviata” at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. The Teatro La Fenice will be showcasing Robert Carsen’s production of “La Traviata” on Friday and Sunday.

Russia

“Lohengrin,” “Cendrillon,” “Le Nozze Di Figaro,” “Mazeppa” and “The Tale of Tsar Sultan” will play at the Mariinsky theater.

Spain

Hui He and Ermonela Jaho share the title role of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” this weekend at the Teatro Real. Plácido Domingo, Anna Pirozzi, Ildebrando D’Arcangeklo and Brian Jagde star in concert performances of Verdi’s “Macbeth.”

Switzerland 

“The Barber of Seville” continues its run at the Zurich Opera as well “Lohengrin” with Brandon Jovanovich in the title role and Rachel-Willis Sørenson as Elsa.

U.K. 

Roberto Alagna, Lise Lindstrom, and Aleksandra Kurzak lead Puccini’s “Turandot” at the Royal Opera House. The opera is set for a livestream on YouTube. Aleksandrs Antonenko and Christine Goerke also star in the Saturday performance of “Turandot.”
