Weekend Preview – International (6/24-26): Jonas Kaufmann, Olga Peretyatko, Nina Stemme & Piotr Beczala Headline The Weekend

The opera season continues in full swing as many of the top stars continue runs of important operas around the world.

Austria

The Vienna State Opera kicks off its weekend with Strauss’ “Elektra” starring Waltraud Meier, Nina Stemme, Regine Hangler, Herbert Lippert and Alan Held. It follows on Saturday with Debussy “Pelléas et Mélisande” with Franz-Josef Selig, Bernarda Fink, Adrian Eröd, Simon Keenlyside and Olga Bezsmertna. The weekend concludes with Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’amore” starring Valentina Naforniţa, Jinxu Xiahou, Marco Caria and Bryn Terfel.

France 

The Opéra National de Paris will continue its run of Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” as well as Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Nadine Sierra and Vittorio Grigolo. The company will also perform Bizet’s “Carmen” with Anita Rachvelishvili in her acclaimed role.

At the Theatre du Capitôle, Meyerbeer’s “Le Prophète” will open with John Osborn, Kate Aldrich, and Sofia Fomina.

Germany 

“Rusalka” headlines the weekend at the Bayerische Staatsoper as Kristine Opolais continues her acclaimed run of performances with Günther Groissböck and Nadia Krasteva.

Meanwhile at the Berlin Staatsoper a new production of Bizet’s “Les Pecheur de Perles” directed by Wim Wenders and starring Olga Peretyatko and Francesco Demuro. Daniel Barenboim conducts the production. Eva-Maria Westbroek also continues her run of Janacek’s “Katya Kabanova” with Sir Simon Rattle conducting.

At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” will be performed followed by Verdi’s “Don Carlo” starring Kristin Lewis and Jamie Barton.

Italy 

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma will showcase the final performance of its winning “Il Viaggio a Reims” directed by Damiano Micheletto.

Switzerland 

The Zürich Opera will continue its run of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” with Sondra Radvanvosky and Marcel Álvarez. The company will also showcase Lehars’ “Das Land des Lachlens with Piotr Beczala and Rebeca Olvera.

United Kingdom

At the Royal Opera House, Ekaterina Bakanova stars as Violetta in Verdi’s “La Traviata” while Jonas Kaufmann continues his acclaimed run as  Verdi’s “Otello.”
