Weekend Preview – International (5/5-7): Jonas Kaufmann And Angela Gheorghiu Reunite For Tosca

It’s yet another packed weekend filled with great stars at the some of the world’s greatest stages. Here are some audiences should check out.

Austria 

Jonas Kaufmann and Angela Gheorghiu reunite for Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Vienna State Opera on Friday. Christopher Maltman takes on the title of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with Pavol Breslik rounding out the cast.

Czech Republic

At the Prague National Opera Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” will be performed on Friday and Verdi’s “La Traviata” will be shown on Sunday.

Denmark 

The Royal Danish Opera will offer Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffman.”

France 

Berg’s “Wozzeck” will take center stage at the Opera de Paris with Johannes Martin Kränzle and Gun-Brit Barkmin heading the cast.

The Opera de Lyon will present Handel’s ‘Alceste” at the end of the weekend with Karine Deshayes in the title role.

Germany 

Svetlana Aksenova takes on the title role of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at the Bayerische Staatsoper on Friday and on Sunday the company will Rossini’s “Guillaume Tell” with Gerald Finley in the title role.

The Berlin State Opera will present Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri” with Tara Erraught, Maxim Mironov, Gyula Orendt and José Fardilha as well as Verdi’s “La Traviata” with Ailyn Pérez, Abdellah Lasri and Simone Piazzola.

“The Abduction from the Seraglio” continues its run at the Semperoper Dresden as well as “Doktor Faust.”

Emily Magee and Roberto Sacca continue their run of Strauss’ “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” at the Hamburg State Opera.

Italy 

At the Teatro alla Scala Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra” continues its run on Friday and Sunday. In between Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” opens with a cast that includes Thomas Hampson and Luca Pisaroni.

Verdi’s “Don Carlo” continues its run at the Maggio Musicale with a cast that includes Julianna Di Giacomo, Roberto Aronica, Ekaterina Gubanova, and Massimo Cavalletti. The company is also presenting Mozart’s “Idomeneo” with Michael Schade and Carmela Regio.

Netherlands

“A Dog’s Heart” will be presented at the Dutch National Opera for its final performance of the season.

Russia 

The Bolshoi Theatre will present Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with Ekaterina Shcherbachenko and Asmik Grigorian sharing the role of Tatiana.

The Mariinsky Theatre will present Gounod’s “Faust,” Stravinsky’s “Le Rossignol” and Verdi’s “La Traviata” will be presented. There will also be a concert performance of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.”

Spain 

Ginastera’s “Bomarzo” will be presented at the Teatro Real with John Daszak. Additionally, the May 5th performance will be streamed on the Opera platform.

Albert Dohmen and Elena Popovskaya lead the Grand Theatre Liceu’s production of “Der Fliegende Höllander” directed by Philipp Stölzl.

Switzerland 

Tatiana Serjan leads the cast in Verdi’s “Macbeth” at the OperanHaus Zürich on Friday while Ben Bernheim and Eleonora Buratto continue their run of Puccini’s “La Bohème” on Saturday. On Sunday Prokofiev’s “Der Feurige Engel” premieres.

United Kingdom 

Thomas Ades’ “The Exterminating Angel” continues its run at the Royal Opera House. The cast includes Anne Sophie Von Otter, Christine Rice, Amanda Echalaz, Thomas Allen and Audrey Luna.

At the English National Opera, “Carousel” continue its run with Katherine Jenkins.
