Weekend Preview – International (5/26-28): Anna Netrebko, John Chest, Roberto Alagna and Vittorio Grigolo Headline Acclaimed Productions

Want some Anna Netrebko in your weekend? Want to see a rising new star who will be a major player in June at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition? Or simply looking for opera on your travels? Here is what is in store this weekend around the world.

Austria 

The Vienna State Opera kicks off its weekend presenting Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Albert Dohmen, Peter Seiffert, Camilla Nylund, Günther Groissböck as well as “Der Rosenkavalier” with Linda Watson, Peter Rose, Sophie Koch, Daniela Fally. The company ends its weekend with Wagner’s “Siegfried” starring Stefan Vinke, Petra Lang, Thomas Johannes Mayer, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Okka von der Damerau, Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke.

Belgium 

Monica Zanettin stars alongside Gaston Rivero in La Monnaie’s current production of Verdi’s “Aida.” Alain Altinoglu conducts.

France

The weekend kicks off with the premiere of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at the Opéra de Paris starring Nadine Sierra and Vittorio Grigolo. Anna Netrebko takes center stage and continues a run of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with Peter Mattei.

Germany 

“Tannhäuser” and “Nabucco” continue their runs at the Bayerische Staatsoper while the Berlin Staatsoper continues its run of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” with Fabio Sartori, Lianna Haroutounian, Marina Prudenskaya, René Pape and Massimo Cavalletti. The company also presents Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust” with Magdalena Kožená and Charles Castronovo.

The Deutsche Oper Berlin will present Britten’s “Billy Budd” with John Chest in the title role as well as Donizetti’s “L’Elisir D’Amore” with Roberto Alagna and his wife Aleksandra Kurzak. The company ends the weekend with Puccini’s “Tosca” starring Maria José Siri and Aleksandrs Antonenko.

Italy

The Teatro alla Scala di Milano presents one opera this weekend, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Thomas Hampson and Luca Pisaroni while the Teatro di Roma continues its run of Berg’s “Lulu.”

The Teator Regio di Torino presents Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” while the Teatro La Fenice continues its run of Verdi’s “La Traviata ” with Jessica Nuccio.

Russia

The Bolshoi presents Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” with an all-Russian cast and Dmitry Beloselsky in the title role.  Vladimir Galouzine and Alexei Markov star in Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” at the Mariinsky Theater. The company also presents Massenet’s “Werther.”

Spain 

Jean-François Borras and Anna Caterina Antonacci star in Massenet’s “Werther” at the Palau de Les Arts while Diana Damrau brings her Bel Canto drammatico tour to the Teatro Real. Additionally, the company showcases its second performances of Rimsky Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel.” At the Liceu Javier Camarena continues his acclaimed turn in Donizetti’s “La Fille du Régiment.”

United Kingdom 

Bryan Hymel and Kristin Lewis continue their run of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” while Pretty Yende makes her Royal Opera debut as Adina in Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore.”
