Weekend Preview – International (5/19-21): Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Renee Fleming & Diana Damrau Take European Theaters By Storm

Plácido Domingo, Reneé Fleming, Anna Netrebko, Diana Damrau or Sonya Yoncheva. All these stars will be in the biggest theaters in Europe and audiences will be in for great performances.

Austria

The Vienna State Opera will celebrate Plácido Domingo’s 50th-anniversary with selections from “Un Ballo in Maschera,” “La Traviata,” and “Simon Boccanegra.” On Saturday the company performs “Das Rheingold” and on Sunday it continues the Ring Cycle with “Die Walküre.”

Belgium 

Monica Zanettin and Gaston Rivero star in La Monnaie’s production of “Aida.” Alain Altinoglu conducts with Giovanni Meoni, also starring as Amonasro.

Denmark

“The Tales of Hoffmann” continues its run at the Royal Danish Opera on Saturday, and on Sunday, “Macbeth” returns to the stage.

France 

Anna Netrebko continues her Opera de Paris’ run of “Eugene Onegin” with Peter Mattei in the title role. The company also continues its showcase of Mozart’s “Bastien et Bastienne.”

“The Pearl Fishers” continues at the Opera de Bordeaux wit David Bizic and Joyce El-Koury” in the leads.

Renée Fleming returns to the stage with Christian Thielemann at the Theatre des Champs Elysées in Strauss’ “Four Last Songs.

Germany 

“Nabucco” continues at the Bavarian State Opera on Saturday and on Sunday Klaus Florian Vogt debuts the title role of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” wit Anja Harteros as Elizabeth and Elena Pankratova.

Tara Erraught stars as Rosina in Berlin State Opera’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” wit Maxim Mironov on Saturday and on Sunday “Don Carlo” continues with Fabio Sartori, Lianna Haroutounian, Marina Prudenskaya and René Pape.

Diana Damrau ignites the stage at the Deutsche Berlin Oper wit the start of her world tour Bel Canto Drammatico. The company also presents Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” and Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” with Marcelo Alvarez and Maria José Siri.

Italy

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” continues at the Teatro alla Scala while at the Opera de Roma Berg’s “Lulu” opens in William Kentridge’s production starring Jennifer Larmore and Agneta Eichenholz in the title role. 

Jessica Nuccio and Leonardo Cortellazzi star in Teatro la Fenice’s “La Traviata” while Eleonora Buratto joins forces with Michele Mariotti in a concert.

Russia

Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” Verdi’s “Otello,” “Nabucco” and “Aida” with Tatiana Serjan, take center stage at the Mariinsky Theater while Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” will be showcased at the Bolshoi Theater.

Spain 

Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” continues its run at the Grand Teatro Liceu alternating with Donizetti’s “La Fille du Régiment” starring Javier Camarena and Ewa Podles.

United Kingdom 

Bryan Hymel stars as Verdi’s “Don Carlo” at the Royal Opera House with Kristin Lewis.
