Weekend Preview – International (3/31-4/2): Jonas Kaufmann, Roberto Alagna and Mariella Devia Headline Productions worldwide

The weekend comes with a number of great works, including three tour de force Donizetti queens. Among the artists performing are Mariella Devia, Jonas Kaufmann, Rene Pape and  Javier Camarena.

Austria 

The Vienna State Opera kicks off its weekend with Massenet’s “Werther” starring Ludovic Tézier, Adrian Eröd and Sophie Koch. The opera will be showcased on the company’s live stream service. It will be followed by Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri” with Adam Plachetka, Maxim Mironov, Margarita Gritskova and Paolo Rumetz.

The weekend concludes with Wagner’s “Parsifal” starring Gerald Finley, René Pape, Christopher Ventris, Jochen Schmeckenbecher and Nina Stemme.

The Volksoper will present Catalani’s dramatic work “La Wally” with Astrid Kessler in the title role. 

Belgium 

Janacek’s “The Cunning Little Vixen” takes center stage at La Monnaie. Performances take place on Friday and Sunday.

Denmark 

At the Royal Danish Opera,  Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia” and Rossini’s “Il Viaggio a Riems” will be offered.

France 

Calixto Bieto’s production of Bizet’s “Carmen” has its final winter performance with Roberto Alagna and Clémentine Margaine.

Meanwhile, Elena Pankratova takes on the title role in Strauss’ “Elektra” at the Opera de Lyon.

Germany 

At the Bayerische Staatsoper, Lisette Oropesa headlines Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” while Karita Mattila continues her acclaimed run in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.” The weekend concludes with the company’s 2017-18 season announcement and Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” starring Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros.

Donald Runnicles leads the first two installments of Wagner’s “The Ring Cycle” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The Semperoper Dresden will show Verdi’s “Rigoletto”  during the weekend.

Italy 

Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” returns to La Scala after numerous years with Hibla Gerzmava and Sonia Ganassi. The run also stars Carlo Colombara.

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma will perform Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” with Marina Rebeka and Paolo Fanale.

Russia

The Bolshoi Theatre will present Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” while the Mariinsky Theatre will showcase Strauss’ “Salome,” Verdi’s “Aida” with Ekaterina Semenchuk,” Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra” and Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.”

Spain 

Mariella Devia returns to the Palau de les Arts with Donzietti’s “Lucrezia Borgia,” which will be live streamed internationally.

At the Teatro Real, Handel’s “Rodelinda” will take center stage with Lucy Crowe in the title role. The Friday performance will be live stream through Medici.tv. 

Carlos Alvarez and Angel Odena continue their acclaimed portrayals of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” The two alternate with Javier Camarena and Antonio Siragusa alternating the role of the Duke at the Liceu.

Switzerland

The Operhaus Zurich opens a new production of Massenet’s “Werther” with Juan Diego Florez. The production will be directed by Tatjana Gürbaca.

United Kingdom 

The Royal Opera House presents Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg.” The production stars Sir Bryn Terfel and is conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
