Weekend Preview – International (3/17-19): Maria Guleghina Returns To The Mariinsky Theater and Jonas Kaufmann Sings ‘Andrea Chénier’

Verdi and Wagner fans are in for a treat this weekend as many of the leading companies will present some of the composers’ greatest works. Additionally audiences are in for an amazing journey with Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros.

Argentina 

At the Teatro Colon the production of Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur” continues with Sabrina Cirera in the title role and Guadalupe Barrientos as the Princess de Bouillon.

Austria 

At the Vienna State Opera, the company will present Strauss’ “Arabella” with Wolfgang Bankl, Camilla Nylund, Chen Reiss, Bo Skovhus and Herbert Lippert. It will be followed Gounod’s “Faust” with Jean-Francois Borras, Luca Pisaroni, Orhan Yildiz and Anita Hartig.

Belgium 

La Monnaie du Mont is back in the swing of things this weekend with Janacek’s “The Cunning Little Vixen.” The cast features an international range of singers and will be presented on Sunday evening.

Verdi’s “Jersualem” will get a rare staging at the Opera Royal de Wallonie with a cast that includes Marc Laho, Elaine Alvarez, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Ivan Thirion, Pietro Picone, Natacha Kowalski and Patrick Delcour. The work will be conducted by rising star Speranza Scappucci.

Denmark

Rossini’s “Il Viaggio a Reims” makes a stop at the Royal Danish Opera this weekend with Nino Machaidze leading the charge in  Damiano Michieletto’s latest production.

France 

The Opera de Paris will present Bizet’s “Carmen” with Roberto Alagna and Clémentine Margaine starring. Roberto Tagliavini and Aleksandra Kurzak round out the cast in Calixto Bieto’s acclaimed production.

Verdi’s “Ernani” continues its run at the Teatre du Capitole with Alfred Kim in the title role alongside Vitaliy Bilyy, Michele Pertusi and Tamara Wilson.

Germany 

The Bayerische Staatsoper will present Verdi’s “Falstaff” with Ambrogio Maestri in the title role, Pavol Breslik, Franco Vassallo, and Véronique Gens.

The company will also continue its run of Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” with Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros. The opera will also be shown on the company’s streaming service as it is completely sold out.

At the Staatsoper Berlin Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne Auf Naxos” will continue its run with Anna Samuil, Roberto Saccà, Elena Sancho Pereg, and Katharina Kammerloher. That will be followed by Wagner’s “Tanhausser” with Burkhard Fritz, Anne Schwanewilms, Wolfgang Koch, Marina Prudenskaya and René Pape.

The Semerperoper in Dresden will present a recital with Rene Pape and concludes the weekend with Busoni’s “Doktor Faust” with Lester Lynch.

Italy

The Teatro alla Scala continues its run of Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” with a cast that includes Michael Volle, Michael Schade and Jacquelyn Wagner.

The Teatro Regio di Torino continues its acclaimed run of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” with María José Siri and Svetlana Kasyan sharing the title role. Gregory Kunde and Carlo ventre share teh role fo Des Greiux.

Jessica Nuccio stars as Violetta the Teatro Massimo di Palermo’s revival of “La Traviata” with René Barbera and Leo Nucci rounding out the cast.

Russia 

Valery Gergiev conducts Verdi’s “I Vespri Sicilianni” with Maria Guleghina and Ildar Abdrazakov at the Mariinsky Theater. The weekend continues with an encore of “I Vespri Sicilianni” and Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with an all-Russian cast.

United Kingdom

Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” takes center stage at the Royal Opera House as the company continues its run of Kasper Holten’s new production with Bryn Terfel in the lead role.
