Weekend Preview – International (1/6- 1/8): Marco Berti Debuts ‘Otello’ at Hamburg As Brian Jagde Makes Munich Debut

This weekend a number of companies will remain on holiday breaks while many major theaters will feature great opera and great singers such as Juan Diego Florez, Brian Jagde, Renee Fleming and Marco Berti.

Austria

Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” will be performed at the Vienna State Opera on Friday evening followed by Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” starring OperaWire Artist of the Week Daniela Fally and superstar tenor Juan Diego Florez.

Denmark

The Copenhagen Opera will present Puccini’s “La Boheme” on Friday followed by Weill’s “The Rise and Fall of Mahongany.”

Germany

At the Bayerische Staatsoper  Brian Jagde will make his anticipated debut in the season premiere of Bizet’s “Carmen.” He will be accompanied by Kate Aldrich who will sing the title role. Vitaliy Bilyy sings the role of Escamillo.

The company will also give the final performance of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” with Johannes Martin Kranzle, who was one of Operawire’s  Artist of the Week.

At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the weekend kicks off with Puccini’s “La Boheme” starring Carmen Giannattasio and Joseph Calleja. It is the final performance of the season so it is not to be missed. On Saturday the company continues its run of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and concludes the weekend with Rossini’s “The Barber of of Seville” with Irene Roberts and Antonio Siragusa.

At the Hamburg State Opera, Marco Berti will sing the title role of Verdi’s “Otello” in Calixto Bieto’s new production. Paolo Carginani conducts the new production. The company will show Puccini’s “La Boheme.”

Italy

At the Teatro alla Scala, Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly will be performed for the last time in the season. Maria Jose Siri and Bryan Hymel will sing the final performance.

Russia 

At the Mariinsky Theatre the weekend kicks off with a concert performance of Dvorak’s “Rusalka” followed by a staged production of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” and Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.” The company will also present the two act opera “The Left-Hander” conducted by Valery Gergiev.

At the Bolshoi Opera the company will present Puccini’s “La Boheme” with different casts including rising star Anna Neschaeva.

Switzerland

At the Zurich Opera Handel’s “Alcina” starring famed mezzo Cecilia Bartoli and Philippe Jaroussky will be performed twice during the weekend. Shostakovich’s masterpiece “Lady Macbeth of Mtzenk” will be featured alongside a staged version of Verdi’s “Requiem” with Francesco Meli and Krassimira Stoyanova.

United Kingdom 

At the Royal Opera House the company continues its run of Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” with Renee Fleming and Alice Coote. The new production by Robert Carson is conducted by Andris Nelsons and is sold out.
