As we get deeper into the summer, the opera world starts to slow down ever so slightly in North America. But there are still some major events taking place over the weekend, including a historic one.

San Francisco Opera closes out its run of “Don Giovanni” which features a stellar cast that includes Ildebrando d’Arcangelo and Ana María Martinez among others. “San Francisco Opera’s ‘Don Giovanni’ brings us bass-baritones with gusto, sopranos with flair, a tenor who pleads his case with feeling, and an opera that never ceases to amaze,” wrote OperaWire’s Lois Silverstein regarding the experience.

The company also closes out its production of “Rigoletto” which stars Quinn Kelsey and Nino Machaidze. “In 2017 San Francisco Opera’s summer production, under the guidance of director and SFO Rob Kearley, we witness a moving performance,” wrote Silverstein about the production.

Wolf Trap Opera also closes its run of Rossini’s “La Pietra del paragone” on Saturday.

Des Moines Metro Opera continues its run of Puccini’s “Turandot” with a performance on Friday. The company showcases “Billy Budd” the following day and “A Little Night Music” to close out the weekend on Sunday.

Cincinnati Opera continues its showcases of “Frida” on Saturday.

Opera Saratoga kicks off its summer season with Verdi’s “Falstaff” on Saturday and Gretry’s rare “Zemire et Azor” on Sunday.

Santa Fe Opera meanwhile kicks off its run of “Lucia di Lammermoor” on Friday and of “Die Fledermaus” on Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Festival Opera opens “Hansel and Gretel” on Saturday.

Finally, OperaRox delivers the NY premiere of “Sweets by Kate” at the Stonewall Inn on Sunday. It is the first time an opera is showcased at the national monument.
