Weekend Preview (4/21-23) – North America: Sondra Radvonovsky’s ‘Tosca’ At LA Among Dozens Of Opera Selections Across USA

Let’s just throw it out there. You could be anywhere in the U.S. this weekend and find an opera somewhere nearby.

The Metropolitan Opera will have a few performances over the weekend, namely “Der Rosenkavalier” on Friday, an HD broadcast of the Saturday matinee of “Eugene Onegin” and “Rigoletto” in the evening.

Also in New York, Tri-Cities Opera will perform Glass’ “Hydrogen Jukebox” on Friday and Sunday and The Julliard School will perform “Katya Kabanova.”

Also on the east coast are performances of “La Fanciulla del West” at Opera Carolina, “Le Nozze di Figaro” from Opera in Williamsburg, a Bella Voce Gala / Fundraiser with the St. Petersburg Opera Company, and a Gala Cubana as part of the Pittsburg Opera Festival.

Moving west across the US, audiences can get a chance to check out “Die Zauberflöte” at Madison Opera, “Flight” at Opera Omaha, and “The Perfect American” at Chicago Opera Theater.”

The state of Texas is ripe with opera as well with the big companies opening major productions.

Dallas Opera is opening a production of “Norma” on Friday and Sunday with a superstar cast that includes Elza van den Heever, Marina Costa-Jackson, Yonghoon Lee and Christian Van Horn with Emmanuel Villaume in the pit.

Meanwhile, Houston Grand Opera will unveil its new production of “Götterdämmerung” on Saturday starring Simon O’Neill, Christine Goerke, Jamie Barton and Andrea Silvestrelli among others. Fort Worth Opera opens a production of “Carmen” on Saturday and “Voir Dire” on Sunday.

Los Angeles Opera opens “Tosca” on Saturday starring Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role and San Diego Opera opens “La Traviata” on Saturday starring Corinne Winters.

If you head north you might catch Seattle Opera’s Gala on Saturday night, or “Les Feluettes” in British Columbia, Canada as part of the Pacific Opera Victoria season.

Those feeling adventurous can head to Honolulu for Hawaii Opera Theatre’s “The Tales of Hoffmann.”
