The Easter and Passover holidays seem to have frozen up the opera world this weekend with only a handful of performances featured around the country.

It’s a major turnaround from last weekend when a dozen companies were putting on a show.

The Metropolitan Opera continues its unstoppable season with three performances. Friday is the final hurrah for Willy Decker’s production of Verdi’s “La Traviata.” This performance also comes with some intrigue because it is still unknown who the leading lady of the night might be. Carmen Giannattasio was ill during Tuesday’s performance and was replaced by Olga Peretyatko who explained extensively, via social media, how she quickly had to learn the production and relearn a role that she had not sung for over a year. Giannattasio is expected to perform on Friday, but it is anyone’s guess whether she has fully recovered.

Saturday afternoon will bring a matinee performance of Verdi’s “Aida” starring Krassimira Stoyanova, who recently talked to OperaWire about her journey in learning the role. It will also feature maestro Daniele Rustioni, who was the star of a show full of them.

The weekend at the Met ends with Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” starring Anna Netrebko in arguably her finest role. Peter Mattei will star in the title role.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Opera finishes up its run of “The Tales of Hoffmann” starring Vittorio Grigolo and Diana Damrau on Saturday and Odyssey Opera will present “Der Zwerg” on Friday.
