Weekend Preview (3/3-5) – USA: Pretty Yende returns to Met Stage for ‘Roméo et Juliette’

A French classic returns to the Met stage this weekend as the other major companies around the states continue business as usual.

Audiences will get a chance to relive Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” at the Met with a new cast starring Pretty Yende and Stephen Costello. The following day, Massenet’s “Werther,” which was widely praised (including by OperaWire) makes its return for a radio broadcast at 1 P.M. EST. In the evening, “La Traviata” takes the stage for the third time this season with Sonya Yoncheva, Michael Fabiano and Thomas Hampson leading the way. OperaWire will be in attendance, so keep an eye for a review the following day.

Meanwhile, Arizona Opera continues its run of Bohmler’s “Riders of the Purple Sage” in Phoenix while at the Washington National Opera, audiences will get a chance to see “Dead Man Walking,” which stars Susan Graham, on Friday and Sunday.

Bizet’s “Carmen” gets a performance on Friday with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in a cast that features Joseph Calleja and Ekaterina Gubanova while the following night the company showcases “Eugene Onegin” with Mariusz Kwiecień, Ana María Martinez and Charles Castronovo as the main cast members.

Los Angeles Opera continues its run of “Salome” on Sunday, starring Patricia Racette. The diva has been the talk of the town for her portrayal of Strauss’ heroine, garnering tremendous reviews for her run of performances in New York and Los Angeles.

The Seattle Opera continues its run of “Katya Kabanova” on Saturday, March 4.
