Weekend Preview (3/10-12) – USA: Dallas, Minnesota, San Diego & Naples Audiences Get New Operas to See

Many opera companies get back in on the action this weekend from all around the country in one of the busier weekends of the season.

The Dallas Opera makes its great return on Friday, March 10 with a production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly.” Hui He stars in the leading role with Gianluca Terranova, Lucas Meachem and Manuela Custer rounding out the cast. Donato Renzetti conducts the Friday performance and another on Sunday at 2 P.M. CT.

San Diego Opera also returns on Friday with a new production of “The Tragedy of Carmen.” Andriana Chuchman stars as Michaela with Peabody Southwell as Carmen and Adrian Kramer as Don José. There are additional performances on Saturday and Sunday.

The following night the Minnesota Opera opens its new production of “Dinner at 8” directed by Tomer Zvulun. William Bolcom conducts a cast that includes Mary Dunleavy, Brenda Harris and Stephen Powell among others.

Opera Naples will also showcase “Rappaccini’s Daughter” on Friday and Sunday at the Wang Opera Center.  The work was composed by famed Mexican composer Daniel Catán, who also composed the popular “Florencia en el Amazonas.”

The Lyric Opera of Chicago showcases “Eugene Onegin” on Saturday with a cast including Ana María Martinez, Mariusz Kwiecien, Charles Castronovo and Alisa Kolosova.

The Seattle Opera showcases the final performances of Katya Kabanova on Friday and Saturday with Melody Moore and Corinne Winters in the title role. Moore sings the Friday while Winters gets the final performance of the run a day later.

The Metropolitan Opera will feature its second performance of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” on Friday evening followed by a Live in HD performance of Verdi’s “La Traviata” on Saturday afternoon and “Roméo et Juliette” in the evening.
