The weekend is upon us and opera fans around the United States are likely looking at how to approach the forthcoming days ahead. Because of the holiday season, there are not many options out there as most companies have taken the month off to recoup and prep for January, when most make a return with a big showcase.

That said, there are still some brave soldiers out there, with some companies presenting operatic gems.

Metropolitan Opera audiences will get a chance to see Strauss’ “Salome,” Saariaho’s “L’Amour De Loin (audiences can see this in movie theaters worldwide)” and Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut.”

Those looking for something more intimate can revel in Opera Breve’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” which plays through Sunday.

LoftOpera will be showcasing Macbeth on Saturday.

Those in Chicago can experience Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” on Saturday at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The Dallas Opera is offering up a concert featuring six female conductors from across the world. That concert will feature music from Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Bizet, Mark Adamo and Jake Hegge among others.

Santa Fe Opera will showcase its Winter Gala at the Cathedra Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi on Friday.
