Weekend Preview (1/13-15) – USA: Seattle & Atlanta Back in Action As Candide Ends Run At NYC Opera

Another weekend in 2017, even more operatic activity around the United States.

Of course the Metropolitan Opera continues its busy schedule with “Il Barbiere di Sivilgia,” “La Bohème” and “Roméo et Juliette” the three major offerings with such stars as Javier Camarena, Pretty Yende, Ailyn Pérez, Michael Fabiano, Vittorio Grigolo and Diana Damrau leading the casts for their respective operas (Click on the respective titles to find out what OperaWire thought of each production).

The New York City Opera continues its run of “Candide” which ends on Sunday after a weekend filled with four performances. The production has garnered solid reviews. Keep an eye out for OperaWire’s review on Saturday morning.

Beth Morrison Projects will showcase a performance of “Mata Hari” at the Here Arts Centers. The music is by Matt Marks with a libretto by Paul Peers.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago will feature another performance of “The Magic Flute” on Saturday while  The Atlanta Opera showcases performances of Rossini’s “Cenerentola” in a one-hour version sung in English. Both performances start at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Corinne Winters makes her debut at the Seattle Opera in “La Traviata,” taking the role on the 14th and 15th.
