Victorian Opera To present World Premiere Of ‘Lorelei’

By Francisco Salazar

The Victorian Opera is set to present a new operatic cabaret entitled “Lorelei.”

The new work will showcase a trio of modern-day sirens crash right into the zeitgeist like a ship against a rock. “Lorelei” will make its world premiere at The Coopers Malthouse in November with soprano and cabaret star Ali McGregor.

McGregor noted in a press release, “The making of Lorelei has been one full of love, friendship, passion and the incredible enclave of Melbourne artists that I think is unlike anywhere else in the world. We’re creating an operatic cabaret looking at the role of the female in literature and opera – the tale of women whose power over men is a construct, a mirage of agency.”

McGregor will be joined by soprano Antoinette Halloran and mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd, who have been long-time friends and collaborators. The trio formed popular cabaret act Opera Burlesque in the mid-noughties with sultry takes on operatic classics and have become beloved nationwide.

Award-winning librettist and composer Casey Bennetto and musical comedian Gillian Cosgriff wrote the libretto and Julian Langdon composed the music.

The work will be performed from Nov. 3 to 10, 2018.
