Verdi, Menotti & Gounod To Be Showcased At Calgary Opera’s 2018-19 Season

The Calgary Opera has announced its 2018-19 season showcasing five operas and a number of collaborations.

Here is a look at what will be on offer.

The season opens on Sept. 28, with BreakThru Films’ animated film, “Magic Piano & The Chopin Shorts,” entertaining for both children and adults, accompanied by a live performance of Chopin. This work will be presented as part of the Calgary International Film Festival, performed at the National Music Center, and in collaboration with the Honens International Piano Competition.

Performance Date: Sept. 28, 2018

In November, the company will showcase Gounod’s “Roméo & Juliette” with a set of rising stars. Adam Luther and Anne-Marie Macintosh star in the leading roles in a new production, which will be directed by the Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet, Jean Grand-Maître. The production, which will be conducted by Gordon Gerrard, will include an extended ballet.

Performance Dates: Nov. 17-23, 2018

The holiday season will be celebrated with Gian Carlo Menotti ’s classic “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” The opera will star a boy soprano and members of the company’s Emerging Artist program.

Performance Dates: TBA

The company will see the Canadian premiere of Joby Talbot’s and librettist Gene Scheer’s “Everest.” The opera, which received glowing reviews, will be conducted by the Music Director of The National Ballet of Canada, David Briskin. Andrew Bidlack, Kevin Burdette, Sarah Larsen, and  Andrew Love star in the new production.

Performance Dates: Feb. 2-8, 2019

Verdi’s “Rigoletto will star Gregory Dahl in the title role with Soprano Nikki Einfeld, and tenor Leonardo Capalbo. Robert Tweten conducts Michael Cavanaugh’s production.

Performance Dates: April 6-12, 2019

The penultimate project for the season will represent another wide-ranging collaboration. This time, the opera company will join forces with the Old Trout Puppet Workshop and The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for “Ghost Opera” from composer Veronika Krausas. The work will be performed by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists.

In August 2019 the Calgary Opera will present Opera in the Village, with an abridged production of “Carmen,” in close collaboration with the Calgary Stampede.
