It’s a starry weekend with many of the leading companies already back in season. This week there are a number of classics that will be shown and one major soprano will make an important role debut. Find out what we think you should see this weekend!

Die Zauberflöte – La Monnaie, Belgium

Romeo Castellucci’s production continues its run with a stellar cast of rising stars including Gabor Bretz, Sabine Devieilhe, and Sophie Karthauser. Antonello Manacorda conducts the production.

Tristan Und Isolde – Opéra National de Paris, France 

It’s always an event when Wagner’s epic opera is presented and in this cast Andreas Schager, Rene Pape, Ekaterina Gubanova, and Martina Serafin take on leading roles. Philippe Jordan conducts Peter Sellars’ acclaimed production.

Tosca – Oper Frankfurt, Germany

Malin Byström makes her highly anticipated debut as Tosca, singing alongside Stefano La Colla. Dario Solari rounds out the cast with Lorenzo Viotti conducting the production by Andreas Kriegenburg. For more on Byström’s upcoming debut here is our interview with the Swedish soprano.

Manon Lescaut – Opera di Roma on Tour, Japan

Kristine Opolais takes on her signature role in Puccini’s early masterpiece. The soprano interprets the failed heroine alongside star tenor Gregory Kunde in Chiara Muti’s classic production. Donato Renzetti conducts the production, which is on tour in Japan.

Faust – Teatro Real de Madrid, Spain

Two casts headline the Teatro Real’s new “Faust.” First Marina Rebeka, Piotr Beczala, and Luca Pisaroni take on the lead roles and then on Sunday, Erwin Schrott, Irina Lungu, and Ismael Jordi lead the cast. Dan Ettinger conducts Alex Olle’s inventive production.
