Top 5 Operas to See This Weekend – International (6/15-17): Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo & Leo Nucci Headline

The World Cup is underway, but the opera companies don’t seem to care all that much. Here is a look at what we think you have to see!

Der Freischütz – Wiener Staatsoper, Austria 

Camila Nylund, Daniela Fally, Alan Held, and Andreas Schager star in a new production of Weber’s gem. The all-star cast is led by Tomáš Netopil at the podium.

Macbeth – Berlin State Opera, Germany

Anna Netrebko and Plácido Domingo lead a new production of Verdi’s beloved opera. The two superstars are joined by Fabio Sartori and Kwangchul Youn with Daniel Barenboim conducting.

Fierrabras – Teatro alla Scala, Italy 

Daniel Harding guides an exceptional cast in Schubert’s neglected work starring Dorothea Röschmann, Anett Fritsch, Markus Werba, and Bernard Richter. The production by Peter Stein comes from the Salzburg Festival, where it was a triumph.

Macbeth – Opera Royal de Liege Wallonie, Belgium 

Leo Nucci and Tatiana Serjan lead a production by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts a cast that also includes Gabriele Mangione and Giacomo Prestia.

Der Rosenkavalier – Glyndebourne Festival, United Kingdom 

Michaela Kaune stars alongside Kate Lindsey in Strauss’ most popular opera. The revival of Richard Jones’ production also stars recent Cardiff Singer of the World winner Louise Alder.
